11th Doctor – Famous Faces

Two portraits of Matt Smith from Doctor Who. This is my fanart contribution to the bittersweet knowledge of his impending regeneration. Each is a 5″x7″ graphite drawing.

I worked on the first drawing for 3 nights in a row, got frustrated, and started making more furious and scribbly marks. I call it ‘raggedy-pencil’ style. I meant to add a fez to the second one, ah well. :-)

Wedding Portrait 2013

This is my cousin, Brad, and his wife, Karisa, who were married on June 1st of this year. My gift to them was this portrait, a graphite drawing sealed in encaustic medium (heated wax and other components).

This sort of mixed media technique grew from the impetus of working for Inspire Prescott. I still haven’t completely worked it out. So in truth, I experimented on my dear cousins :). Even so, I’m confident they were happy with it, and I can’t wait to try another portrait in this style.

And click here to see a snapshot album of the artwork I’m showing.

I spent the past week painting furiously and came up with these 4 new encaustic portraits — referencing Pre-Raphaelite portraiture and William Morris patterns and other old fashioned things. They will be hanging in the gallery for the next few months.

Famous Faces: Albert Einstein

I let the occasion dictate the portrait today; it gave me an excuse to draw a most iconic face. ..and mad-scientist hair.

Happy Birthday to dear Albert Einstein. And Happy Pi Day to everyone :-P.

Here’s an epic Einstein quote: “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music.”

Famous Faces – Sub-Series

A while ago, I received a famous face suggestion on this blog’s Facebook page for actor Colin Firth.

A well-known actor is an endless character sketch. At first, I planned to sketch Firth as himself, as King George in the King’s Speech, as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, as Cedric Brown in Nanny McPhee, and a few others… then follow the same plan for other actors/actresses and create a whole sub-series out of it… I only got as far as King George VI (the drawing below). I might still follow through with the idea at some point.

If I continue this ‘sub-series’ I’d like to ask for your input.. Who would you like to see next?
