Painting Drama

Exciting news! I made it through Painting Drama 1, a composition and visual storytelling course mentored by Chris Oatley through Oatley Academy.

It was a rare and valuable chance to absorb vast amounts of visual storytelling wizardry, which I hope will truly affect my art going forward. My brain is still processing it all.

Here are a couple of pieces (along with just a few development sketches) I did for the class. Hoping to share more soon:

I’m so thankful for such personalized guidance from the amazing Chris Oatley, and priceless interaction with classmates. Check out the work of my fellow PD students at the links below:

The Lion with a Top Hat

Progress on my digital painting assignment from Oatley Academy.

This character makes me think of a lion-tamer.. Some weird irony there :-P.

Preliminary drawings, color comps, and the painting by John Singer Sargent that I used for the assignment.

Children’s Book Illustration

Steadily getting accustomed to illustrating for children’s books :). Here’s a glimpse:

Just as a reminder, the illustrations I’ve been posting are client work which I’m permitted to show as portfolio pieces. I’m not writing these stories myself.

BearChaseStory
Final painting – Color and final detail painted digitally in Photoshop

As you can see, this story involves a bear chase and (in case you’re worried) has a happy ending.

Atrium Project

I’ve been working on a fun freelance project, a concept painting for an atrium-style waiting room… not an architectural drawing, thank goodness, just an idea for an interior. The finished painting will be used in a business pitch.

Here are some ink, watercolor, and digital sketches,

For now, just bouncing ideas back and forth with my client to establish the layout of the room. The main concern is that everything be almost completely covered in plants. Nearing the final painting soon. Stay tuned!

11th Doctor – Famous Faces

Two portraits of Matt Smith from Doctor Who. This is my fanart contribution to the bittersweet knowledge of his impending regeneration. Each is a 5″x7″ graphite drawing.

I worked on the first drawing for 3 nights in a row, got frustrated, and started making more furious and scribbly marks. I call it ‘raggedy-pencil’ style. I meant to add a fez to the second one, ah well. :-)
