Lewis Carroll, pen name for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born on this day (January 27), 1832, well-known mostly as the author of Alice and Wonderland.
On this day, 2013, I tried sketching his portrait — as well as a study from one of John Tenniel’s illustrations in Alice and Wonderland (1865 edition). Graphite on paper, dimensions of each: rather small.
I recently came across this sketch challenge: draw 100 faces, each in 30 seconds or less. Though I haven’t reached that number of faces at one time, I have scribbled a few here and there — quickly as possible and with ink instead of pencil.
Try it yourself :-). Some sketches prompted by Holly Herick’s 100 faces challenge :

Here’s a graphite portrait of my little brother, 5 years old, in one of his mischievous moods.
And here’s me —
Here’s a fifth drawing to bind off this portrait series:
This guy’s sweater is based on a traditional pattern of Korsnäs in Finland.
Nordic Knitting is still my reference (see previous post). Finnish patterns inspired this drawing:
Some drawings. Some words too, but not many :).
I have a book called Nordic Knitting; a collection of traditional Scandinavian knitting patterns. Norway (Selbu pattern) and Sweden (Dalarna sleeves), inspired these pencil sketches. More underway ~
A glimpse of my J.S.Sargent book collection. He is my hero-painter :). Today, I sketched some master studies of his portraits for my series, Famous Faces.

Just delivered this commission — father and grandfather of my friend Stephanie. She asked me to paint this as a gift for her father. If anyone can tell what make and model the truck is, I’m curious to know. Cars compuzzle me greatly.
I’m told the year is somewhere in the 1950s – 1960s.

Here begins my Freehand Famous Faces series.
It started with my friend’s suggestion to do a portrait of John Rhys-Davies, then it spread to other members of the LOTR movie cast. More to come :)
